چکیده

Ellagic acid is a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound present in pomegranate plants, strawberries, grapes, apples, tendril blueberries, blackberries and walnuts. Ellagic acid exhibits a variety of effects such as anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, immune regulatory and anti-tumor effects (Chen et al., 2011). In particular, ellagic acid has an inhibitory effect on many tumors, and is currently one of the most promising natural drugs for cancer therapy. However, the molecular mechanisms by which ellagic acid exhibits anti-tumor effects are not completely understood. Uncontrolled cell proliferation and the resistance to apoptosis are important features of cancer (Hanahan D, Weinberg RA. Hallmarks of cancer: the next generation. Cell. 2011;144:646-74). Thus we speculated that ellagic acid may suppress the proliferation of cancer cells and induce apoptosis in cancer cells. In this study we used MCF-7 breast cancer cells as the experimental model and examined the effects of ellagic acid these cells. Based on our preliminary microarray data that ellagic acid regulated TGF-β signaling pathway, we constructed smad3 overexpression plasmids and explored whether ellagic acid inhibited the proliferation of MCF-7 breast cancer cells via the regulation of the TGF-β/Smad3 pathway, which

Cytotoxic and anti-proliferative effects of Rosa beggeriana Schrenk extracts on human liver and breast cancer cells

Objective: Rosa beggeriana Schrenk has been consumed in Iranian traditional medicine. In contrary to its close species (e.g. R. canina), there is no data on its medicinal properties. Therefore, we explored possible cytotoxic effects of R. beggeriana against two cancer cell lines. Materials and Methods: The cytotoxic and anti-pro...

Title Ellagic acid, a phenolic compound, exerts anti-angiogenesis effects via VEGFR-2 signaling pathway in breast cancer

Anti-angiogenesis targeting VEGFR-2 has been considered as an important strategy for cancer therapy. Ellagic acid is a naturally existing polyphenol widely found in fruits and vegetables. It was reported that ellagic acid interfered with some angiogenesis-dependent pathologies. Yet the mechanisms involved were not fully understood. Thus, we analyzed its anti-angiogenesis effects and mechanisms ...

The correlation between telomerase activity and Bax/Bcl-2 ratio in valproic acid-treated MCF-7 breast cancer cell line

Objective(s):Valproic acid (VPA), a drug used in the treatment of neurological disorders, has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on cancer cells through different mechanisms. Telomerase, a ribonucleoprotein reverse transcriptase, is responsible for elongation of the telomere and is activated in cancers. A relation between telomerase activity and resistance to apoptosis has been established. T...
